Anima Christi

The ancient prayer attributed to St. Ignatius of Loyola, traditionally prayed after receiving Holy Communion.

The Anima Christi is an ancient prayer traditionally attributed to St. Ignatius of Loyola and prayed after receiving Holy Communion. Its short lines, Soul of Christ, sanctify me; Body of Christ, save me, ask for union with Christ in every part of your being. It is brief enough to memorise and rich enough to meditate on for years. It also prepares you for the moment of death. Praying it slowly after Communion turns the minutes of thanksgiving into a conversation. The line Within your wounds hide me is especially consoling in times of fear. Many people also pray it at the end of the day, or when death is near.

Anima Christi

Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, inebriate me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O good Jesus, hear me. Within Thy wounds hide me. Permit me not to be separated from Thee. From the wicked foe defend me. At the hour of my death call me and bid me come to Thee, that with Thy Saints I may praise Thee forever and ever. Amen.
