Baptism of the Lord Prayer

Prayer for the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord (Sunday after Epiphany). The Trinity is revealed at the Jordan: the Father speaks, the Son is baptized, the Spirit descends.

The Baptism of the Lord Prayer is for the Sunday after Epiphany, when the Trinity is revealed at the Jordan: the Father speaks, the Son is baptised and the Spirit descends. It invites you to remember your own baptism and to hear the words, You are my beloved, as spoken to you. It closes the Christmas season and begins Ordinary Time. Bless yourself with holy water as you pray. Parents can say it with children, naming their baptismal date and thanking God for their godparents. It is a quiet feast, but its message is deep: before Jesus did anything public, the Father said he was loved. You are loved before you achieve anything, too.

Baptism of the Lord Prayer

Prayer for the Baptism of the Lord:
Lord Jesus, You had no sin to wash away, yet You stood in the Jordan River and asked John to baptize You. You who are the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit submitted to a baptism of repentance — not for Your sake, but for ours. You took our place, as You would take our place on the Cross.

As You came up from the water, the heavens opened. The Holy Spirit descended upon You in bodily form like a dove. And the voice of the Father spoke from heaven: 'You are my beloved Son; with You I am well pleased.'

For the first time in history, the Holy Trinity was revealed clearly to the world: the Father speaks, the Son is baptized, the Spirit descends. What the ancient world had only glimpsed was now made plain — God is a communion of three Persons, and all three are at work in our salvation.

In our own Baptism, we too heard these words spoken over us. We too were plunged into water and raised up. We too received the Holy Spirit. We too became beloved sons and daughters of the Father, in the Beloved Son.

Lord, help me to live worthy of my Baptism. May I never forget whose I am — a beloved child of God, sealed by the Holy Spirit. Let me walk this day in the dignity of my Baptismal calling. Amen.
