Litany of the Saints

The ancient litany calling upon the whole company of heaven, prayed at the Easter Vigil, ordinations, and in times of great need. The Church militant calls upon the Church triumphant.

The Litany of the Saints is the ancient prayer that calls on the whole company of heaven, and it is sung at the Easter Vigil, at ordinations and in times of great need. The Church on earth asks the Church in heaven to pray with it. The long list of names, from Mary and the apostles to martyrs and modern saints, shows how large the family of God is. It is also a prayer for those about to be baptised or ordained.
