Pentecost Prayer
For the Feast of Pentecost — invoking the Holy Spirit who came upon the apostles and still comes upon the Church.
The Pentecost Prayer is for the feast when the Holy Spirit came upon the apostles as wind and fire, and still comes upon the Church. It asks for the gifts of wisdom, courage and joy, and for a fresh start. The prayer is brief, so you can use it every day of the Pentecost octave. Pair it with the Come, Holy Spirit sequence. Wind and fire are images of power and warmth, which is what the disciples needed to leave the upper room. You may need the same today. Pray it before Confirmation preparation, a hard week at work or whenever you feel your faith has gone flat.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful
and kindle in them the fire of Your love.
Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created,
and You shall renew the face of the earth.
Lord God, on this day You instructed the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit. Grant that by the same Spirit we may be truly wise and ever rejoice in His consolation.
We remember the upper room — the doors locked out of fear, the disciples huddled together, still grieving, still uncertain, still waiting. And then: the sound of a rushing wind. Tongues of fire. And the same men who had hidden now standing in the streets, speaking in every tongue, proclaiming the resurrection without fear.
This is Your promise to the Church: not that we will be comfortable, but that we will not be alone. Not that we will be safe from the world, but that we will be given power to face it.
Holy Spirit, come upon us now. Come as wind — clear away the staleness and fear. Come as fire — purify what needs purifying and set ablaze what needs to burn. Come as gift — counsel, wisdom, understanding, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and the fear of the Lord.
Mary, who was in the upper room when the Spirit descended, pray for the Church. Pray for us. May we never quench the fire You lit.
Amen.
