Act of Spiritual Communion

A traditional prayer for spiritual communion when physical reception of the Eucharist is not possible.

The Act of Spiritual Communion is a traditional prayer for when you cannot receive the Eucharist physically, because of illness, distance, travel or a Mass you can only watch online. It expresses a sincere desire to be united with Christ and asks him to come into your heart. The Church does not say it replaces the sacrament, but it is a genuine way to stay close to Jesus. It is brief enough to say at any moment. Many people prayed it often during periods when churches were closed, and found real consolation in it. It is also a good way to prepare for your next physical Communion.

Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are truly present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

— Traditional prayer attributed to St. Alphonsus Liguori
