Sub Tuum Praesidium

One of the oldest known Marian prayers, dating to c. 250 AD — traditionally prayed after the Rosary and Litany

The Sub Tuum Praesidium, We fly to your patronage, is one of the oldest known prayers to Mary, preserved on a papyrus dated to around 250 AD. It asks her to hear our petitions and deliver us from all dangers. It is brief and calm, and has been used in the liturgy for centuries, often after the Rosary. You are praying with Christians of the third century. Its brevity makes it perfect for moments of danger or confusion, and its age reminds you that Christians have always run to Mary for help. Keep it in your pocket as a small anchor.

Sub Tuum Praesidium

We fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God;
despise not our petitions in our necessities,
but deliver us always from all dangers,
O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Amen.
