Lord Jesus, You gave Saint Alphonsus a burning love for the souls most abandoned and most in need of Your mercy. Through his intercession, grant us the same zeal for souls and confidence in Your boundless compassion. Amen.
O glorious Saint Alphonsus Liguori, Doctor of the Church and founder of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer! Born of noble stock, you left a promising legal career when you discovered that your cleverness had led you to defend an unjust cause. 'World, I know you now,' you said, and gave yourself entirely to God.
You spent your life preaching missions to the most abandoned poor in the countryside of Naples. You wrote more than a hundred books on prayer, moral theology, and devotion — all aimed at helping ordinary sinners find their way to God's mercy.
You wrote: 'He who prays is certainly saved. He who prays not is certainly damned.' You had a burning conviction that no sinner is beyond God's mercy, and you made it your life's work to bring that truth to the poor.
