Novena to Saint Boniface – 9 Days of Prayer
The Apostle of Germany who felled the sacred oak of Thor to prove Christ's supremacy, organized the German Church, and died at 75 with a Bible open on his chest. Patron of Germany and brewers.
St. Boniface, an English monk, became the apostle of Germany. According to tradition, he felled a sacred oak at Geismar to show the people that Christ was stronger than their old gods. He organised the Church in the German lands and died a martyr in 754, reportedly with a book of Scripture held over his head. This novena prays for courage in witness. His feast is June 5. Pray it for the Church in Germany and the Netherlands, where he laboured, and for any friend who is drifting from faith. Courage in witness is often quiet, and begins with kindness.
A novena is nine consecutive days of prayer. Begin nine days before the feast (June 5) and finish on its eve. You can pray this novena at any time of year.

Intention: For Missionaries, Germany, and Those Who Evangelize New Territories
Saint Boniface, you were born Wynfrith in England, became a Benedictine monk, and felt the call to the pagan peoples of Germany. You were already forty years old when you set out on your first mission — and you spent the next thirty-five years building the Church in the heart of Europe.
The defining moment came at Geismar: you took an axe to the great oak of Thor, the sacred tree of the Germanic pagans, and cut it down. No lightning struck you. The crowd, who had expected the gods to destroy you, was silent — and then began to listen.
You built monasteries. You organized bishops. You crowned Pippin the Short and established the Carolingian dynasty that would shape medieval Europe. And at seventy-five, returning to preach to the Frisians who had not yet heard the Gospel, you were killed by pagans. They found you with a Gospel book shielding your head.
Intercede for us as we begin this novena. Amen.
Saint Boniface, you did not wait for perfect conditions to bring the Gospel. You brought it to people who had never heard it, in a land that seemed hostile, at an age when most people have stopped taking risks.
Pray for missionaries of every kind — those who travel across oceans, and those who cross the street to their neighbor. Give them your courage and your patience.
Pray for Europe, which was once Christian through your labor and is now again in need of the Gospel. Pray for a new evangelization — not of imposition but of witness, of the kind of truth-telling that cuts down false gods not with violence but with love.
Pray for those who feel called to go somewhere new for the faith — to a new country, a new culture, a new chapter — and are afraid. You went at forty. You went at seventy-five. Tell them it is not too late.
Saint Boniface, Apostle of Germany, pray for us. Amen.
Lord God, through Saint Boniface You built Your Church in lands that did not know You. May his courage inspire all who carry the Gospel into unfamiliar places, and may the faith he planted continue to bear fruit for generations. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Pray this prayer once a day for nine days in a row.
