Novena to Saint Elizabeth of Hungary – prayer for all nine days

Intention: For the Poor, Caregivers, and Those Who Give Up Comfort for Others

Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, you were a princess who lived as a servant. Married at fourteen, widowed at twenty, you gave away the royal treasury for the poor and the sick. When your husband Louis died on crusade, you were expelled from the castle with your children in winter — yet you did not curse God.

You fed thousands during famine. You built a hospital beneath your castle and washed the feet of lepers. When your servants tried to stop you carrying bread to the poor, the legend says the bread turned to roses in your hands — a sign that what is given for love is never wasted.

You died at twenty-four, but you had already spent yourself completely for God and for the poor. Intercede for us as we begin this novena. Amen.

Saint Elizabeth, you showed us that holiness is not lived in comfortable distance from suffering. You touched the lepers, bathed the sick, pressed coins into the hands of the hungry.

Pray for us, that we might see Christ in the poor and the suffering. When we are tempted to give only from our surplus, inspire us with your royal generosity. You gave from your need, not your abundance.

In your own suffering — widowed, expelled, stripped of everything — you did not harden your heart. You said, "Lord, You have given me this." Help us to hold our gifts loosely and our losses with faith.

Saint Elizabeth, patron of the poor and the Franciscan family, intercede for all who are homeless, hungry, sick, or alone. And lead us to become instruments of Your mercy in a world that needs it desperately.

Amen.

Lord Jesus, You said "whatever you did for the least of these, you did for me." Through the intercession of Saint Elizabeth, who saw Your face in every beggar at the gate, fill us with generous love for the poor, courage to act on that love, and joy in giving ourselves away for Your kingdom. Amen.
