Our Lady of Mount Carmel Novena – 9 Days of Prayer
Novena to Our Lady under her Carmelite title — the mother who gave the Brown Scapular and promised to watch over those who wear it
Our Lady of Mount Carmel is honoured under her Carmelite title as Queen and Beauty of Carmel. Tradition says she gave the Brown Scapular to St. Simon Stock and promised to watch over those who wear it. This novena asks for her protection and for a deeper life of prayer. Wearing the scapular is a sign of devotion, not a charm. Her feast is July 16. The Carmelites trace their roots to hermits on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land, where the prophet Elijah once prayed. Pray the novena for a quieter heart, for those in purgatory, and for a happy death.
A novena is nine consecutive days of prayer. Begin nine days before the feast (July 16) and finish on its eve. You can pray this novena at any time of year.

Intention: For Perseverance and Marian Devotion
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, you appeared to St. Simon Stock on Mount Carmel and gave him the Brown Scapular with the promise: 'Whoever dies clothed in this shall never suffer eternal fire.' You have been honored on that holy mountain since the time of the prophet Elijah, who saw a small cloud rise from the sea — a sign, the tradition says, of you: small, humble, bringing the rain of grace to a dry land.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Queen and Beauty of Carmel, you stand as a mother to all who seek God in contemplation and prayer. The Carmelite tradition has produced some of the Church's greatest mystics — Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Thérèse of Lisieux — all formed in your school of prayer.
You teach us that prayer is not an escape from the world but a plunge into the heart of God. You show us that contemplation and action belong together — that Mary sat at the Lord's feet and Martha worked, and both were needed.
I wear your scapular (or I come before you now) as a sign of my desire to belong to you. Not as a magic charm, but as a child's way of saying: I want to be close to my mother. I want her near me in life and in death.
(Pause to mention your intentions)
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, wrap me in your mantle. Intercede for the graces I bring before you. And when my last hour comes — as it will — be with me, as you were with your Son in His last hour. Lead me safely through death into eternal life.
Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory Be...
